Ways to Help Your Child Gain Confidence

You want your child to mature into a confident adult and to do that, you have to begin helping them gain confidence as children. There are numerous ways that you can help your child build confidence by utilizing research-based strategies and you can even make it fun.

Ask for Advice

Adults like to be asked for their opinion and children blossom when they think you value their ideas. Ask for their advice in regard to age-appropriate situations.

Give Them Tasks

Giving a child age-appropriate jobs and responsibilities teaches them that they can do things on their own. It can be helpful to call new activities “special” to encourage them to try new things.

Let Them Fail

As long as their physical, mental or emotional health isn’t at risk, it’s imperative that children be allowed to try something even if they fail. That’s how children and even adults learn, overcome and innovate.

Spend Time Together

Just being in the same house isn’t the same as spending quality time with your child. Take time to play together, eat a meal, go for walks, and engage in other activities that demonstrate you like to be with them and enjoy their company. It can also be helpful if you have more than one child to set aside a specific time alone with each child without a sibling present.

Stay Positive

Shaming and criticizing children makes them afraid to try for fear of your reaction. It makes them less confident and they turn inward. It’s also important that children not hear adults denigrate themselves, their abilities, or others.

Unconditional Love

Children that know they’re loved even when they make poor decisions or mistakes have the confidence to try new things. Praise them right away on the effort they put forth rather than the outcome and be specific so they learn to be proud of their accomplishments.

Planning your Family Reunion

Family reunions are a fun tradition and families have unique ways to celebrate this tradition. South Florida is ideal for family reunions with warm weather, plenty of sunshine and beautiful landscape it’s the ideal place for every type of party. Here are some tips for planning your family reunion that will keep you smiling in the sun!

Preplanning is crucial for this type of event and applies in particular if there will be people flying in or driving long distances. Contact the local hotels to see if they offer any group discounts. In most cases, they will allow such a thing if there are multiple families lodging at the same time.

Invite those who can attend in harmony. In many instances, these are family gatherings that allow families to reconnect and that’s the whole idea.

The food and drink are an essential part of a family reunion. Be sure to consider religious and food preferences as not everyone enjoys the same types of diet.  Set a budget for food and consider catering with a local business so you can concentrate on other things.

Games and activities are paramount to keep everyone engaged and promote bonding. Keep the party going by offering both kids, and adult themed features such as charades, twenty questions to bounce houses and waterslides. The more thought and planning you do, the more successful your family’s event will become.

Fun on the Road

Road trips can be a lot of fun, but they also present a challenge in terms of keeping kids entertained. There are dozens of miniature, magnetic versions of popular board games and card games. There’s also the indispensable coloring book, but they can only distract for so long. Don’t be afraid to use electronic devices to keep kids occupied. The following are some popular ways to keep kids of any age occupied on a road trip.

LEGO®

From beneath the ocean to outer space, miniature LEGO® kits are available for any interest. They take up little space, provide hours of fun, and teach kids a variety of skills while they’re assembling the project. It’s helpful to place them in an inexpensive plastic box to keep track of the pieces.

Movies

Some vehicles are equipped with backseat screens and entertainment systems that can essentially transform them into a rolling movie theater. Systems can also be bought separately and installed in vehicles. To complete the effect, pack appropriate snacks for the kids to munch while they view the films.

Tablets and Kindles

Download games, educational apps, or books to a tablet for on-the-road fun. There are options for youngsters of all age groups, ensuring that everyone has age appropriate entertainment. Kindles and similar devices are excellent for downloading books, along with read aloud selections for younger kids.

Traditional Road Games

These include looking for and tallying license plates from different states or being the first to spot a specific item along the way.

Be Prepared

Be sure to plan ahead for bathroom breaks. It’s also a good idea to bring a Frisbee or ball for children to play with during rest stops so they can really stretch their legs and get some exercise. Don’t forget backseat organizers – they provide a place for kids to put all their amusements and snacks, and some include cup holders.

Hot Dogs From Around the U.S.

Hot dogs are a staple of backyard BBQs and they’re no longer the one-size fits all that you may remember from your childhood. Available in regular lengths of six inches to foot-longs, they can be smothered in any condiment imaginable. The only unvarying constant is that hot dogs come in packs of 10 and hot dog buns remain an eight-pack.

While there are dozens of hot dog brands, some are more popular in certain regions of the U.S. and even the choice of condiments and buns can be a bone of contention among die-hard enthusiasts. The following words of authority on hot dogs come from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

New York Dog

It’s topped with sautéed onions and tomato paste, sauerkraut, and spicy brown mustard, though all-beef franks are typically completed with sauerkraut, melted cheese and Thousand Island dressing.

Chicago Dog

A Chicago dog has chopped onion, pickle relish, yellow mustard, medium-hot pepper, tomato slices, and a dash of celery salt served on a poppy seed bun.

Coney Island Dog

A Michigan favorite, the hot dog is smothered in chili sauce, mustard and onion.

Cleveland Polish Boy

The Polish Boy can be a hot dog or kielbasa. It begins with the meat, followed by a layer of French fries, sweet BBQ sauce or hot sauce, and a layer of coleslaw.

Sonoran Dog

Popular throughout the southwest it originated in Hermosillo, Mexico. It’s a bacon-wrapped hot dog topped with grilled onions, green peppers, relish, chopped tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, jalapeno salsa, shredded cheese, and pinto beans.

Rockie Dog

The foot-longs are topped with onions, grilled peppers and sauerkraut.

New Jersey Dog

An Italian hot dog rests in a pizza bread bun, topped with onions, peppers and deep-fried potatoes.

Texas Dog

It’s a hot dog covered in chili, cheese, and jalapenos.

Kansas City Dog

These are topped with melted Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on a sesame seed bun.

Fenway Frank

Boiled and grilled, it’s served with mustard, relish, and Boston baked beans on a New England-style bun.

Reindeer Hot Dog

The hot dog is typically made of caribou, served in a steamed bun, and onions that may be sautéed in Coca-Cola®.

West Virginia Dog

The hot dog is topped with chili, coleslaw and mustard on a steamed bun.

Philadelphia Dog

This is an all-beef hot dog with a fish cake, topped with spicy mustard and sweet coleslaw.

Cincinnati Coney

Hot dogs are topped with chili and grated cheese.

Hot Dogs for All

There’s a hot dog for everyone in the U.S., from the cream cheese covered dogs in Seattle to the coleslaw and Vidalia onion-topped dogs favored in the south. No matter what they’re topped with, they’ve been a hit since German immigrant, Charles Feltman, sold the first hot dog on Coney Island in the 1860s.

Ways to Reduce Your “Single Use Plastic”

The U.S. generates more than 30 million tons of plastic waste each year and it’s not even the top producer. Those levels continue to escalate and only seven percent is recycled. It breaks into trillions of little pieces that pollute the ground, water, and kills wildlife. Plastic waste is a severe environmental hazard around the globe.

You don’t have to alter your lifestyle to be environmentally responsible. Just a few small changes can make an enormous difference. The following are some of the easiest ways to make a difference and reduce single-use plastic.

  1. Don’t use plastic straws, even at eateries. Buy a reusable glass or stainless steel straw that you can take with you anywhere you go.
  2. Buy a plastic or insulated steel water bottle instead of purchasing bottled water. It can be refilled almost anywhere and you’ll be saving money.
  3. Instead of disposable razors, invest in one that uses replaceable blades.
  4. Bring a reusable, cloth shopping bag to take home purchases at stores or farmer’s markets and remember to wash them often. Plastic grocery bags take 1,000 years to degrade. Say no to plastic produce bags and containers.
  5. Choose matches over disposable lighters or use a metal lighter that can be refilled.
  6. Forgo plastic silverware at home. You can also request that restaurants not include plastic utensils in take-out orders.
  7. Consider keeping a set of bamboo eating utensils for dining at informal eateries and on the go.
  8. Take lunches and snacks to work, school or outings in reusable plastic containers and bags.
  9. Not all plastic jugs can be recycled. Purchase products such as juice and laundry soap in recyclable packaging whenever possible.
  10. Buy fruits, veggies, pasta and cereal in bulk and repackage at home in reusable containers. It also saves money.
  11. Don’t buy fruits and veggies in individually packaged cups. Buy a large can and preserve leftovers in reusable containers.
  12. Rethink frozen meals and convenience foods.
  13. Learn what’s recyclable and what isn’t. Most cities offer curbside recycling programs.

Sun Protection Done Right

Millions of people flock to sunny locales every year to catch some rays, but many find a painful sunburn instead when they don’t take appropriate precautions. The most important rule everyone should remember is to apply sunscreen anytime they go outdoors. The UVB and UVA rays emitted by the sun are always present, even on cloudy days.

UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and play a role in skin cancer, but UVA rays are equally dangerous. They penetrate below the outer skin level, damage DNA, hasten the aging process, and play a significant role in skin cancer. There are a variety of precautions that can be taken to have fun in the sun while minimizing the risk.

Know the Danger Zone

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m.-4 p.m., thus increasing the risk of sunburn. Try finding activities in the shade or in filtered sunlight during those times. Babies age 6 months and younger should be covered and kept in the shade at all times.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours and every hour by those that are swimming or sweating. The SPF numbers tell how many minutes it will take the sun’s rays to begin reddening the skin, assuming that the sunscreen is applied exactly as directed. Use a high SPF

However, it’s important to understand that the lighter the skin tone, the quicker the skin will turn red. Apply 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and don’t forget to apply lip balm with a minimum of SPF 30.

Sunglasses

Eye protection is particularly important on the beach or on a boat. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays and increase the potential of damaging eyes and getting sunburned. People have permanently damaged their vision by spending several hours on the water without sunglasses. Choose a pair of chic shades that provide 99-100 percent UV absorption.

Clothing

Long-sleeved shirts and long pants of breathable material provide an added layer of protection. Tightly woven and dark colored clothing block more of the sun’s rays. There are also garments made of specialized sun-protective fabric.

Hats

Accessorize every outfit with a wide-brimmed hat that shades the eyes, face and ears.

Play it Safe

Sunburn is painful, damages the skin, and can lead to skin cancer down the road. Individuals that take certain medications that make them more sensitive to the sun should use additional care. Fun in the sun is even more enjoyable when the proper precautions are taken and sun protection is done right.
