For book enthusiasts, summer is the best time to tear into a new book, or ten! In fact, during summer, with schools out and loads of time in your hands, it’s the perfect time to lounge by the pool with a drink and a new favorite read. This novel offers the reader an uninhibited look into life in Lagos through the uncanny narration of the lives of a rebel fighter, an army officer, a beautiful runaway and a teenage girl. This one promises to be a page-turner for sure.

“Bad Blood” by John Carreyrou

For those book enthusiasts who have the knack to put a book down only when it’s finished, this is a perfect read for you. Find out how a Silicon Valley start-up engineers a blood testing machine, whose work is legendary- if only it would work. A gripping tale about passion, frustration, and greed that is bound to make your summer reading all the more hotter.

“Some Trick” by Helen DeWitt

This collection of 13 short stories is a great read for the reader who prefers a lighter read. Helen DeWitt will take you on a humorous trip down the twistiest of rabbit holes while throwing in her unique brand of unpredictability as she goes. Tuck this one into your beach bag, it is worth your lazy afternoon nap.

“Goodbye, Sweet Girl” by Kelly Sundberg

A gripping and heart-wrenching true account about domestic violence and fury, the author bares her soul about her own marriage in this page-turner. Furthermore, this novel is an expanded of her earlier memoir, “It Will Look Like A Sunset”, a tale about her own husband and his bouts of vicious anger.

Summer Movies For The Kids

Summer is upon us, school’s out and the kids are home. This is a pretty exciting time for them after months in school. The sunny weather comes with loads of outdoor activities, as well as indoor activities such as watching movies. Movies will give you a break from having to think up fun and exciting things to do all day, plus you can also jump in on the fun.

Below is a list of kids’ movies to watch out for during this summer break, in no particular order of preference. No spoilers here!

  1. Sherlock Gnomes

This animated comedy brings back the legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes. Two garden gnomes aptly named Gnomeo and Juliet hire the services of this legendary detective to look into the strange disappearance of their friends. Sit back and stock up on the popcorn as this is one rollercoaster of laughter you will be riding from the beginning to the end.

  1. The Incredibles 2

The first Incredibles movie premiered way back in 2004, probably way before any of your kids were born. Regardless, this first movie was such a hit that you can be sure your kids will love it. It would be great to have them watch the first movie at home, and then take them to the theatres to watch the largely-acclaimed sequel in theatres this June.

  1. Ant-Man and The Wasp

Marvel Studios never disappoints, and that is the same expectation you ought to carry into the theatres this July when this movie begins showing. The story-line focuses on a super-hero trying to maintain the work-life balance as he raises his daughter and battles a new threat. It already sounds like a perfect way to spend an afternoon in July.

  1. Hotel Transylvania 3: summer vacation

This sequel of the Hotel Transylvania 2 spins off with Count Dracula taking a cruise with his kooky bunch of supernatural friends. As expected, there will be loads of laughs as this eccentric gang gets into all types of situations like when Skeleton loses it at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Meanwhile, Count Dracula channels his affection to a most unusual subject. Expect to enjoy great laughs and thrills; as you while your afternoon away with the kids this July.

  1. Eighth Grade

A welcome change from the animation overload is this thought-provoking movie. The focus of the storyline is on a wall-flower type of girl in 8th grade trying to navigate life despite the many challenges that come with her age. And as if that’s not challenging enough, she is also trying to record the perfect YouTube video. How will that end? That’s stuff that you can only find in the movies this July.

Plan a Science Party for Your Child’s Birthday

As a parent, you already know that keeping kids occupied during a party can be sometimes challenging. You want to keep the activity going without breaking the momentum or the bank. We’ve put together a few tips on what how to throw your child a ‘Science Party’ that will not only keep the kids amused it might teach them something as well.

Kids love to craft and make stuff.

There are recipes online for homemade slime to crystal Geode eggs that are beautiful to look at when finished. You can find a ton of great ideas by visiting a few blogs and Pinterest. If you are planning on throwing your son or daughter a Science Party then be sure to plan up to three or four experiments for the kids to conduct. In fact, the DIY projects are going to be the highlight of your party.

Actually, mom blogger, Carla is a certified teacher who teaches biology. Her experiment called Elephant Toothpaste may get a little messy or sticky since it’s made with soda. Be sure to have plenty of space and set down some tarps before letting the good times roll with this crazy foam. Word to the Wise: If your kids are allergic to soap, this might not work so well.
  • Most parties there will be a limit on the experiments. Ask your child which they think look like the most fun and what their friends would enjoy.

Dealing with the After-Holiday Blah’s

The season has come and gone and now everyone who is blasé with vacations, toys, sweets, etc., is now looking for anything to say those horrific words “I’m bored.” As a parent, these words muttered together with that sniveling whine can make you quiver with angst. What do you do? We’ve got the answers right here in this week’s blog.

Hint, Hint: (of course, we’re not going to tell you to rent a bounce house or anything until the end, where you’ll be looking to put us on speed dial)

There are a million, gazillion, trillion answers online. By visiting places like Pinterest and Parenting Magazine, you can find a ton of great games, projects or whatever else floats your kid’s boat. Here’s a one we found ideal for staying home.

The Fizzy Candy Cane Experiment is totally awesome and a great way to rid your children of cavities. Plus, it’s a science project, so it’s okay. You’ll need the following to conduct the process:

  • Leftover Candy Canes
  • 1 Box Baking Soda
  • 1 Bottle Vinegar
  • Any Color Food Coloring
  • A baking pan that’s deep
  • Measuring Cup
  • Spoons

Follow these steps:

  1. Spread all the baking soda out on the sheet.
  2. Place Candy Canes on top of the baking soda and try to spread them out evenly.
  3. Mix food coloring with a cup of vinegar.
  4. With a spoon have each child drop vinegar mixture onto the baking soda in the pan.

If all goes well, there’s going to be a lot of fizz and the colors from the food coloring plus whatever dye is in the candy canes will create beautiful designs of foamy color. If you didn’t like the idea of this project, let’s move onto the next.

Another idea to keep in your boredom briefcase is local activities online.

  • Take your kids to an outdoor yoga camp for a day.
  • You can do a Google Alert for free events in South Florida or Coral Springs.
  • Consider visiting one of the many museums in South Florida. Check to see if they have any days open to free admittance for kids.

Just Common Sense?

In a recent article found in Parenting Magazine, the author highlights some excellent points for do’s and don’ts of taking photos of your child. Rather than adhering to photography 101, they mention the safety issues of making her son’s pic and then distributing it across all your social media channels. Today’s world has become hazardous when it comes to places such as Facebook and Instagram. While we don’t want to discourage anyone from sharing family events and the like, we do think many of the tips in the article were valid. As parents, ourselves, we want everyone to have a safe and happy life without putting our kids in danger. In this blog, we expound on some of the important points you should know.

The first point they make is not to take pictures of your kids during their bath time. It’s downright sad to say they have a point that these types of photos can get into the wrong hands. While we think, kids are adorable, it’s their safety that counts.

Next, up, posting shaming videos may seem innocent but, it’s also something that can make a real mess. We’ve all seen a few videos on Facebook and Twitter where a child pouts or tells off a parent. The article claims this can be devastating in the long run. Not exactly sure how or why but they also advise this type of photo opportunity can cause a child to become stressed or develop anxiety. While this may be true, we do think this is an over the top statement by the author.

Now we know shaming and bath time are out, when do you know when to take a photo? The time may not be right if your child attends a private school where uniforms are worn with a school logo. This can tell perpetrators where your kids go to school. Be sure to give your kids proper instruction when babysitting or attending events. Children should be taught that people can find them online and places like Facebook aren’t good to advertise addresses, situations where they’re home alone or what school they go to. It may seem like common sense to you, but to your kids, it might be a different story.

Lastly, the author gives some excellent advice on not taking photos during unsafe activities. The picture isn’t the important part, the safety of yourself and your children are. People taking pics of your kids while you aren’t looking at all angles of a situation can be dangerous. Parents could be reported if they’re taking photos of their children sitting on their laps while driving a car when they should be in a car seat, can get you into some serious trouble, on top of backlash from your followers. The best suggestions we should think twice before grabbing your smartphone.

It seems with the fall being upon us once again, more of our philanthropy events are taking place around South Florida. Every organization from the Boys and Girls club to the local churches are planning their yearly events. Many of us busy bees and procrastinators forget the entertainment till last.
