Sun Protection Done Right

Millions of people flock to sunny locales every year to catch some rays, but many find a painful sunburn instead when they don’t take appropriate precautions. The most important rule everyone should remember is to apply sunscreen anytime they go outdoors. The UVB and UVA rays emitted by the sun are always present, even on cloudy days. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and play a role in skin cancer, but UVA rays are equally dangerous. They penetrate below the outer skin level, damage DNA, hasten the aging process, and play a significant role in skin cancer. There are a variety of precautions that can be taken to have fun in the sun while minimizing the risk.

Know the Danger Zone

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m.-4 p.m., thus increasing the risk of sunburn. Try finding activities in the shade or in filtered sunlight during those times. Babies age 6 months and younger should be covered and kept in the shade at all times.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours and every hour by those that are swimming or sweating. The SPF numbers tell how many minutes it will take the sun’s rays to begin reddening the skin, assuming that the sunscreen is applied exactly as directed. Use a high SPF However, it’s important to understand that the lighter the skin tone, the quicker the skin will turn red. Apply 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and don’t forget to apply lip balm with a minimum of SPF 30.

Sunglasses

Eye protection is particularly important on the beach or on a boat. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays and increase the potential of damaging eyes and getting sunburned. People have permanently damaged their vision by spending several hours on the water without sunglasses. Choose a pair of chic shades that provide 99-100 percent UV absorption.

Clothing

Long-sleeved shirts and long pants of breathable material provide an added layer of protection. Tightly woven and dark colored clothing block more of the sun’s rays. There are also garments made of specialized sun-protective fabric.

Hats

Accessorize every outfit with a wide-brimmed hat that shades the eyes, face and ears.

Play it Safe

Sunburn is painful, damages the skin, and can lead to skin cancer down the road. Individuals that take certain medications that make them more sensitive to the sun should use additional care. Fun in the sun is even more enjoyable when the proper precautions are taken and sun protection is done right.

Letting Kids Fail can Teach Life-Long Lessons

Every parent wants their children to be safe and avoid injuries whether they come in the form of physical or mental discomfort. Watching a child fail brings forth a variety of parental emotions. It’s a natural reaction, but as much as parents want to insulate them from the world, allowing kids to try and fail is the best teacher and they’ll be learning important lessons they’ll carry with them throughout their lifetime. Children learn the same way adults do – trial and error – and it’s an effective teacher. Parents can warn children about consequences, but a child won’t fully grasp the concept unless they actually experience penalties. From forgetting their homework to leaving their bike in the driveway, a less than stellar grade or a stolen bike teaches a valuable lesson about responsibility and accountability for their own actions. Parents that try to “fix” their kids’ grades –and succeed – are simply teaching their child that might makes right and that with enough power, they don’t have to take responsibility. Children know if they’re failing a subject and they may lie about it – until the report card makes it impossible to hide. While a bad grade isn’t a crisis, lying about it should carry consequences. Part of the problem is that today’s parenting gurus equate good parenting with not allowing their children to experience “negative emotions.” Those feelings teach youngsters coping skills and how to avoid situations in the future that evoke those feelings. There are numerous opportunities for learning and growth when parents take a step back. It happens with small actions from something as simple as learning to wait their turn in line. Kids learn qualities of patience, tolerance and responsibility. When teen drama occurs, parents should take a back seat and let kids learn to work it out on their own – the exception is if they’re being bullied in person or online. Just as adults learn that failure to complete their tasks to the best of their ability and on time comes with consequences, so children learn through smaller examples in everyday life. Children that are allowed to fail grow up to become competent, responsible, resilient and empowered adults.

Winter Movies We Can’t Wait For!

Winter is a great time to go the movies.  Long dark nights are just right for date nights, family outings or a trip out with friends.  Before the madness of the holiday season sets in, treat yourself to a night at the movies to catch one of these December releases:

Ben Is Back

This time of year is perfect for a gripping drama and Ben Is Back doesn’t disappoint.   When the charming yet troubled Ben Burns returns home to his unsuspecting family one fateful Christmas Eve, it is down to his mother Holly (Julia Roberts) to save him from himself. While she welcomes her beloved son’s return, she quickly learns that he is still very much in harm’s way. The next 24 hours may change all their lives forever, and Holly must do everything in her power to avoid the family’s downfall.

Once Upon a Deadpool

This is a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 with new scenes and teen-friendly language making it safe for younger fans to enjoy. Adults will get the Princess Bride-like storytelling with familiar faces throughout the movie. This will be a limited engagement so be sure to see it while you can! In theaters December 12th.

Spider-Man – Into The Spider-Verse

In this movie about the web-slinging Marvel superhero, it’s Miles Morales who is swinging around New York City this time around. The teen gets some training from the original superhero Peter Parker and discovers that there’s a “Spider-Verse” out there with more than just one Spider-Man.

Aquaman

This is the latest film based on a DC superhero, that finally tells the full backstory of Arthur Curry, the half-Atlantean, half-human who is the rightful heir to the kingdom of Atlantis. Joining him as he tries to keep the peace between the underwater world and the surface world is Amber Heard as his love interest, Mera, and Nicole Kidman as his mother, Queen Atlanna.

Mary Poppins Returns

It is over half a century since Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke first starred in the wonderful Mary Poppins.  A family favorite since its first opened, the London nanny who carried everything in that carpet bag, has been a much-loved character for children the world over.  This new version stars Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda and is set in 1930s London, where the umbrella-wielding nanny returns to help the Banks family after a tragedy.

Bumblebee

As a prequel to the Transformers film franchise that began in 2007, Bumblebee is set 20 years earlier and follows the adorable autobot of the same name. Together with his new best friend, a girl called Charlie, the two must outrun a government organization known as Sector 7, led by Agent Burns (John Cena).  Along the way, they discover that Bumblebee isn’t the only Transformer on Earth.

Holmes and Watson

This re-telling of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson is probably the most light-hearted rendition ever made. Comedy duo Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly don their hats to become super-sleuths, as they attempt to stop an assassination attempt against Queen Victoria by rival James Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes).

Keeping Safe In The Summer Heat

During summer, you want to make the most of the summer sun before the chilly fall weather sets in. Summer always seems to rush by, and the colder months drag along. Understandably, this would make you want to stay out longer in the sun, getting that tan in as much as you can before you have to pack the shorts away. As you enjoy time in the sun, be sure to stay safe in the heat of summer. It is likely that one can get sunstroke, heat stroke or even a nasty sunburn if you do not take the following precautions.
  1. Take lots of fluids
During summer, you are bound to lose more water through perspiration than in the colder months. It is wise to keep a cold drink close by and sip from it often; do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. Furthermore, avoid alcoholic and sugary drinks because they can actually dehydrate you! The best drink to reach for is a cool bottle or glass of water. However, you should avoid very cold drinks as these are known to cause stomach cramps.
  1. Stay indoors
What? Stay indoors during summer? Well, when the temperatures are really high, especially in the early afternoons, you should stay away from the direct sun. By staying indoors, you can choose to take your outdoor fun indoors to a mall for some shopping or a movie theatre to catch the latest blockbuster. A few hours in an air-conditioned area will help your body to stay cooler once you get back outside under the sun.
  1. Your dressing
During summer, choose light-weight, airy fabrics to keep your skin free from any build-up of sweat. Furthermore, you should wear clothes that are loose-fitting and have light colors, not dark colors. It is a widely proven fact that dark colors absorb heat while light colors deflect it away from you. Additionally, you should put on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head, face, neck, and shoulders from the sun’s glare. Don’t forget to put on some sunscreen with a high UV filter to protect your skin.
  1. Children and pets
Keep children and pets in shady areas away from the direct glare of the sun. Ensure that you apply child-sensitive sun-screen on your children before you step out with them. Furthermore, ensure that they are well hydrated by keeping them on fluids continually. Do not, under any circumstances, leave children or pets in a locked car even for a few minutes, this is very dangerous. If you observe these tips, you are sure to enjoy your summer without rushing to the ER this year. Another great way to keep safe in the summer heat is renting any one of our waterslides which come with a shaded area to protect you from the sun as you keep cool in the water. We have a wide variety of waterslides that can fit in your backyard for some cooling summer fun. Contact us today and we will be sure to provide you with what you need this summer.

A Waterslide Is A Great Addition To Your Party

A Waterslide Is A Great Addition To Your Party Hooray! The long cold winter months are finally behind you. What else is on your mind right now rather than how best to enjoy the outdoors? Spring is an appropriate time to host a party. You can no longer resist the urge to organize that baby shower, bridal shower, graduation party, backyard barbecue or poolside party you have been postponing. Some of the ideas you can exploit include having cake, food, skewered meat, some music, interactive games, and a few drinks. The goal is to have everyone enjoy and get into the party mood. Have you ever thought of having a waterslide at your party? Here are ways it can stoke the fun and keep everyone from going home early. Drop a hint during invitations Waterslides are not the preserve of kids alone. Adults too can have a great time. While sending invites, inform your guests that there will be a poolside surprise. Remind them to bring necessities such as sunscreen, bathing suit, towel, flip-flops, and sunglasses. Let the visitors come to your place with anticipation. Do not disclose what lies in store yet. Rent a waterslide Surprise your guests with a flashy water slide. Excellent choices include ‘The Hulk,’ ‘MudSlide,’ ‘The Twister with Curve,’ or the ‘Tsunami’. The Twister is a 40ft tall waterslide featuring two slides to make sure that your guests (both kids and adults) do not have to wait too long for their turn. It also features a curve at the end terminating in a landing pool. Guests at your party will remember the thrill of sliding from a height of 40 feet for many months to come. Alternatively, go for “The Hulk” variety that also comprises of dual slides with the fun beginning at 36 feet. Get a Bounce House if you don’t have water In case you find it hard to get enough water for a slide, try bounce houses. There are different varieties to choose from. Colorful themes available include candy, sports, disco and Zoo Island. All it takes is to have the bounce house inflated after which your home is ready for fun. Obstacle courses are a fun addition as well and are sure to tire out the most active of the bunch!  You can’t go wrong with an inflatable at your party. Set the party On the day of the event, have the slide rental company inflate it at the designated spot. Do this early in the morning to allow the water to get warm just in time for the action. To create a break and provide variety, have a game of, say, badminton to keep the fun rolling. In conclusion Waterslides add flavor to a backyard party. To keep everyone anxious, request them to carry items they would need for a swimming outing. Rent a slide from the many options available and choose one with double slots to minimize waiting time.

Teach Your Kids Useful Skills

Daily Skillset Every Child Should Learn Before you know it, your kids will be grown and on their own. But, you need to teach your child essential life skills making their daily routines a higher quality of life. No grown-up should be without the knowledge of these useful skills. Teach Your Kids How to Cook Cooking is one skillset everyone should have. Because eating is a part of life, it’s important to know food preparation and how to follow a balanced diet. Start teaching your kids to cook even when they are toddlers. You can help them to learn how to make logical decisions when it comes to nutrition. Many people achieve healthy choices by introducing raw diet or giving them alternatives to high sugar, flour or fat. Introduce veggies early and don’t frown when it’s time to enjoy them as a family. Teach Your Kids How to Deal with Emergencies Next, teach your kids to dial the phone and how to get to emergency numbers quickly. A recent article that hit the ABC News describes an asthmatic mom being rescued because her seven-year-old knew to call dispatch. Children are smart, and because this boy’s parents ensured him how to call for help, the mother lived to tell the story. It’s important to teach our kids how to act during tough situations. But, it’s also necessary. Teach Your Kids Self-Defense Also, teach your kids how to defend themselves adequately. While we don’t always want to think of dangerous scenarios, we do want to know our kids will do the right thing if an attack is present. Enroll your kids in martial arts or sign them up for self-defense classes. These skills are imperative for kids to survive and can be used as adults. Teach Your Kids How to Manage Time Time management skills are often terrible for adults much fewer children. However, as parents who learn punctuality, you can pass that down to your kids. In fact, if they see you are late picking them up or dropping them off at soccer practice, school, etc., they will learn this is okay behavior. However, don’t kid yourself, with that “Do as I Say, Not as I Do” mentality. Kids learn from their parents, give them valuable skills, and they’ll never have to embarrass themselves again. Teach Your Kids About Money We can all use some extra money at the end of the month, right? You need to teach your kids to have excellent money management skills to ensure they live with financial freedom. Some child psychologists may argue what age is appropriate for kids to learn about money. Regardless, you can start making your kids aware of things like waiting on buying toys or how to use an ATM at a very young age. These are just a few of life’s lessons that you can do to teach your kids these critical daily skillsets they will use forever. Best of luck!
