How to Organize the Perfect New Year’s Block Party

Ushering out the old year and welcoming in the new is the perfect reason to celebrate.  If you don’t want to spend your New Year’s Eve in a bar or nightclub and want to enjoy family-friendly fun instead, organizing a block party is a great way to celebrate with your nearest and dearest in a safe, laid back and inexpensive way.

Block parties work well with neighbors of all ages, at any time of year.  But come new year’s, they are the perfect way to celebrate with your family, your kids, your neighbors and your friends.

If you are thinking about throwing a block party this new year, follow our top tips on how to make it the best one ever.

  1. Choose the best location

You don’t need to choose a date for a New Year’s Eve party as December 31st is the only date you need, but, you will need to choose a venue that works well for everyone.  If you live in a neighborhood with a communal space like a park, lake or large grass area, this is the perfect place for your gathering.  If you live in a more urban area with apartment blocks on every corner, a parking lot could also work for you.

  1. Send out your invitations

Get some invites printed out and let the neighbors know about your party.  Tell them when to arrive, where it is being held and important information like what they should bring with them – food, chairs, blankets, rugs, games etc. Be sure to put your name and number on the invite, so that your neighbors can call to ask any questions or offer to help.  You should also make sure that the invitation extends to the whole family – so be sure to confirm that kids are welcome too.

  1. Organize a potluck

Unless you are planning on spending a lot of money on professional catering, most block parties are based around potluck fare that adds to the fun of it all.  Ask everyone who comes along to bring a dish with them and be sure to keep a list of who is bringing what so there is plenty of variety on the table. Salads, casseroles, pasta dishes and sweet treats for the little ones all taste amazing when someone else has made them.

If you are planning on having a BBQ, you can ask guests to bring some meat for cooking.  You should also inquire about vegetarian or vegan guests and ensure that they are catered for too.

Winter Movies We Can’t Wait For!

Winter is a great time to go the movies.  Long dark nights are just right for date nights, family outings or a trip out with friends.  Before the madness of the holiday season sets in, treat yourself to a night at the movies to catch one of these December releases:

Ben Is Back

This time of year is perfect for a gripping drama and Ben Is Back doesn’t disappoint.   When the charming yet troubled Ben Burns returns home to his unsuspecting family one fateful Christmas Eve, it is down to his mother Holly (Julia Roberts) to save him from himself. While she welcomes her beloved son’s return, she quickly learns that he is still very much in harm’s way. The next 24 hours may change all their lives forever, and Holly must do everything in her power to avoid the family’s downfall.

Once Upon a Deadpool

This is a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 with new scenes and teen-friendly language making it safe for younger fans to enjoy. Adults will get the Princess Bride-like storytelling with familiar faces throughout the movie. This will be a limited engagement so be sure to see it while you can! In theaters December 12th.

Spider-Man – Into The Spider-Verse

In this movie about the web-slinging Marvel superhero, it’s Miles Morales who is swinging around New York City this time around. The teen gets some training from the original superhero Peter Parker and discovers that there’s a “Spider-Verse” out there with more than just one Spider-Man.

Aquaman

This is the latest film based on a DC superhero, that finally tells the full backstory of Arthur Curry, the half-Atlantean, half-human who is the rightful heir to the kingdom of Atlantis. Joining him as he tries to keep the peace between the underwater world and the surface world is Amber Heard as his love interest, Mera, and Nicole Kidman as his mother, Queen Atlanna.

Mary Poppins Returns

It is over half a century since Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke first starred in the wonderful Mary Poppins.  A family favorite since its first opened, the London nanny who carried everything in that carpet bag, has been a much-loved character for children the world over.  This new version stars Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda and is set in 1930s London, where the umbrella-wielding nanny returns to help the Banks family after a tragedy.

Bumblebee

As a prequel to the Transformers film franchise that began in 2007, Bumblebee is set 20 years earlier and follows the adorable autobot of the same name. Together with his new best friend, a girl called Charlie, the two must outrun a government organization known as Sector 7, led by Agent Burns (John Cena).  Along the way, they discover that Bumblebee isn’t the only Transformer on Earth.

Holmes and Watson

This re-telling of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson is probably the most light-hearted rendition ever made. Comedy duo Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly don their hats to become super-sleuths, as they attempt to stop an assassination attempt against Queen Victoria by rival James Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes).

Finger Foods That Everyone Will Love

A great party is full of good music, excellent entertainment and great tasting food. From sit down dinners to banquets and buffets, the food you serve at your next event will help to make it the best one yet.

Ham and Cheese Sliders

An easy alternative to burgers, these sliders are perfect for kids and adults and are easy to eat with a drink in one hand, and a plate in the other.  Make tiny layered sandwiches using freshly baked bread or brioche and fill them with layers of good quality cheese and delicately flavored ham. Grill for just a few moments to make the bread soft, and the cheese gooey.

Turkey and Cranberry Sliders

Just like above, these sliders are easy to eat and simple to make.  Use good quality cold cuts, or cook your bird from fresh, and layer a good size dollop of cranberry sauce on fresh white bread or brioche to make delicious, mini festive sandwich bites.

Savory Christmas Trees

Using salami and cheese layered between store brought puff pastry, simply fold the strips of dough accordion style and place on a skewer.  Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or so and add a green olive to top off your tree.

Whiskey Meatballs

Meatballs on cocktail sticks make the most awesome finger foods.  Go for a more grown-up variation on the theme by letting the meatballs simmer in sugar, ketchup, lemon juice and bourbon whiskey to make them melt-in-the-mouth delicious.  Place them on a cocktail stick and serve hot.

Pastries, pretzels, sandwiches, salads, crackers, cookies, cakes and candies are also great ways to stave off hunger as you and your guests enjoy a holiday party this Christmas.
