Sunscreen Do’s And Dont’s

It is that time of the year again –the dog days of summer– and everyone is planning on going for a summer vacation in the parks and beaches to enjoy soaking up in the rays of the sun. But then, have you thought about developing an aging skin, or skin cancer? To reduce the possibility of developing any of these, it is always recommendable to apply sunscreen appropriately. This sounds like a theory to most people, and probably there is a lack of understanding of how to apply sunscreen judging from the increase in the incidences of skin cancer reported nowadays.

So what are the DOs as you plan to lather up in sunscreen this summer?

  1. Understand the components

Sunscreens have different components. Your ideal sunscreen should have components with the power to block UVA, and have the ability of remain on your body’s surface as opposed to getting absorbed. Components such as Mexoryl SX, avenobenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc are great UVA blockers.

  1. Apply sunscreen earlier before going in the sun

Usually, it is recommendable to apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside. Such a time gives the sunscreen enough time length to protect you from the UV rays. Some mineral sunscreens such as those containing zinc oxide start protecting your body against UV rays shortly after applying them.

  1. Apply enough sunscreen

Irrespective of the type of sunscreen one is using, it cannot work effectively if applied sparingly. Your body alone will need about two ounces of fluid. However, it should be noted that over time the functionality of the sunscreen decreases hence, requires reapplication after about 2 hours of being in the sun.

And what should you avoid?

  1. Avoid sunscreen sprays

These sprays are convenient. However, the challenge is that it is easy to apply too little or miss a few areas. In addition, it is easy to inhale the sprays. This should not happen given that some have toxic substances.

  1. Avoid using your makeup as sunscreen

Theoretically, makeup is considered ideal for preventing UV rays. However, most people fail to wear makeup that is considered enough or even fail to reapply as often to enhance the efficiency of the SPF. It is recommended to wear sunscreen on top of your makeup for better results.

  1. Avoid sunscreens with higher SPF

It is easy to be fooled by a high percentage of SPF in the sunscreens. A report by FDA has indicated that such products are not suitable in offering the required protection against UV rays. Moreover, they make one overconfident leading to the failure to reapply. It is recommendable to use products that have SPF of between 15 and 30+.

Evidently, there is a lot to know before applying sunscreen. The choice of the ideal product is an important aspect that should be on the top of your to-do list. As you do it, choose a product with components that will guarantee you much protection.
