Sun Protection Done Right

Millions of people flock to sunny locales every year to catch some rays, but many find a painful sunburn instead when they don’t take appropriate precautions. The most important rule everyone should remember is to apply sunscreen anytime they go outdoors. The UVB and UVA rays emitted by the sun are always present, even on cloudy days.

UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and play a role in skin cancer, but UVA rays are equally dangerous. They penetrate below the outer skin level, damage DNA, hasten the aging process, and play a significant role in skin cancer. There are a variety of precautions that can be taken to have fun in the sun while minimizing the risk.

Know the Danger Zone

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m.-4 p.m., thus increasing the risk of sunburn. Try finding activities in the shade or in filtered sunlight during those times. Babies age 6 months and younger should be covered and kept in the shade at all times.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours and every hour by those that are swimming or sweating. The SPF numbers tell how many minutes it will take the sun’s rays to begin reddening the skin, assuming that the sunscreen is applied exactly as directed. Use a high SPF

However, it’s important to understand that the lighter the skin tone, the quicker the skin will turn red. Apply 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and don’t forget to apply lip balm with a minimum of SPF 30.

Sunglasses

Eye protection is particularly important on the beach or on a boat. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays and increase the potential of damaging eyes and getting sunburned. People have permanently damaged their vision by spending several hours on the water without sunglasses. Choose a pair of chic shades that provide 99-100 percent UV absorption.

Clothing

Long-sleeved shirts and long pants of breathable material provide an added layer of protection. Tightly woven and dark colored clothing block more of the sun’s rays. There are also garments made of specialized sun-protective fabric.

Hats

Accessorize every outfit with a wide-brimmed hat that shades the eyes, face and ears.

Play it Safe

Sunburn is painful, damages the skin, and can lead to skin cancer down the road. Individuals that take certain medications that make them more sensitive to the sun should use additional care. Fun in the sun is even more enjoyable when the proper precautions are taken and sun protection is done right.

There’s a wealth of unique gifts for Moms living in Florida, along with those that find themselves transplanted to other locales around the world. Here are some suggestions to make Mom’s day extra special.

Key Lime

Floridians are serious about key lime and there are a number of shops throughout the state that will deliver a basket of lime-based goodies direct to Mom ranging from lotions to sweets. Or you can take her for key lime pie on a stick.

Garden Gladiators

Florida is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse botanical gardens and arboretums in the U.S. Consider an outing to one of the state’s many gardens specializing in tropical plants, roses, orchids, herbs or collections from six continents.

Sports

Let Mom display her team spirit with jerseys, jackets, sweatshirts and hoodies, totes, bags and footwear from the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars or Tampa Bay Bucs.

Mystery and Puzzle Fans

Take Mom into a real-life mystery that’s part puzzle and part scavenger hunt to locate clues in an hour-long escape room adventure. No one will be disappointed with one of these adventures.

The Need for Speed

For the Mom that doesn’t believe in slowing down, take her on a Walt Disney Driving Experience. Mom can take a ride-along for six laps with a professional driver in an exotic high-performance car.

Dolphins and Manatees

Mom can swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove, Dolphins Plus, Gulf World Marine Park, and Miami Seaquarium. If Mom is a fan of manatees, adopt one for her at Save The Manatee that works to preserve the gentle, endangered national treasures of Florida.

Bounce House and Slides

For a day at home that lets Mom rest or join the fun as she desires, South Florida Bounce has water slides, bounce houses, interactive games, photo booths to commemorate the day, and food machines so she doesn’t have to cook.

Keep Your Pet Safe in the Florida Heat

Millions of people flock to Florida each year to spend time in the summer sun and they often bring their pets with them. What you may not realize is that the very warmth you seek can make your pet ill or even kill them if you don’t take appropriate precautions.

A majority of the pets that people take with them are dogs, but cats, birds, fish, ferrets and even pet pigs can experience heat exhaustion and death if left in a car, truck or motorhome for even a short length of time on a mildly warm or humid day.

Animals don’t sweat – they can only pant to cool themselves off. Vehicle temperatures can elevate by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes and increase exponentially. Leaving a window cracked doesn’t help and can actually exacerbate the situation. The following tips will help keep your pet safe in the Florida heat.

  • Never leave an animal in a parked car, even for 5 minutes
  • Don’t walk pets on paved surfaces or on hot beach sand – it burns their feet
  • Avoid walks and playtime during the warmest and most humid parts of the day
  • For pets with medical or breed-related conditions, be aware that even a short walk can endanger them
  • Always make sure your pet has a sufficient supply of fresh clean water, plenty of shade and a non-paved place to rest
  • Provide your pet with access to air conditioning – they need it even more than you do
  • A hair trim is fine to help your pet in the heat, but never shave them – they’ll sunburn
  • Regular grooming can help pets shed loose hair that can contribute to overheating
  • If you see a pet trapped in a vehicle on a hot day, notify authorities and stay there until help arrives

Humidity adversely affects pets as much as heat and Florida experiences its share of both. The danger increases when the two are combined. You and your pet can enjoy your sojourn in Florida by taking appropriate precautions to keep them safe and factoring in the weather conditions for the time of year you visit.

For thrill-seekers, tune your outdoor “TV” to an adventure channel with an activity that combines the fun of a trampoline with the excitement of bungee jumping. You can also choose a four-sided rock wall for climbing, an inflatable corn maze, a giant hamster ball course, or human foosball. You can also choose an inflatable 9-hole golf course, interactive space or sumo arenas, gladiator jousting, water balloon wars, and the ever-popular skee ball.

South Florida Bounce lets you bring the fun of a carnival midway to your back yard. Add ambiance with a bubble machine while friends and family try their luck at the dunk tank. Multiple game booths are offered, along with “Plinko,” a cash cube, and a trackless train.

Letting Kids Fail can Teach Life-Long Lessons

Every parent wants their children to be safe and avoid injuries whether they come in the form of physical or mental discomfort. Watching a child fail brings forth a variety of parental emotions. It’s a natural reaction, but as much as parents want to insulate them from the world, allowing kids to try and fail is the best teacher and they’ll be learning important lessons they’ll carry with them throughout their lifetime.

Children learn the same way adults do – trial and error – and it’s an effective teacher. Parents can warn children about consequences, but a child won’t fully grasp the concept unless they actually experience penalties. From forgetting their homework to leaving their bike in the driveway, a less than stellar grade or a stolen bike teaches a valuable lesson about responsibility and accountability for their own actions.

Parents that try to “fix” their kids’ grades –and succeed – are simply teaching their child that might makes right and that with enough power, they don’t have to take responsibility. Children know if they’re failing a subject and they may lie about it – until the report card makes it impossible to hide. While a bad grade isn’t a crisis, lying about it should carry consequences.

Part of the problem is that today’s parenting gurus equate good parenting with not allowing their children to experience “negative emotions.” Those feelings teach youngsters coping skills and how to avoid situations in the future that evoke those feelings.

There are numerous opportunities for learning and growth when parents take a step back. It happens with small actions from something as simple as learning to wait their turn in line. Kids learn qualities of patience, tolerance and responsibility. When teen drama occurs, parents should take a back seat and let kids learn to work it out on their own – the exception is if they’re being bullied in person or online.

Just as adults learn that failure to complete their tasks to the best of their ability and on time comes with consequences, so children learn through smaller examples in everyday life. Children that are allowed to fail grow up to become competent, responsible, resilient and empowered adults.

6 Amazing Gluten-Free Desserts that Kids Will Eat!

The number of children being diagnosed with a gluten allergy is increasing and the severity can be life-threatening for some. It’s better to be safe than sorry and for those that want to make homemade treats, a number of tasty dessert options are available that kids will eat and even ask for seconds.

Brownies

Avoiding gluten doesn’t mean giving up the rich taste of brownies. The chocolaty treats are perfect for little hands and eating on the go. The most common flour for use in gluten-free brownies is almond flour, but be sure that those that partake of the chewy sweets don’t have a nut allergy.

Cookies

Gluten-free cookies don’t need hours to bake or an extensive number of ingredients to make. Healthy three-ingredient cookies are a welcome treat that can easily be made with gluten-free cake mix, eggs and extra virgin olive oil. An added benefit is that gluten-free cake mixes are offered in multiple flavors.

Cake Pops

Few desserts gain a child’s attention like cake pops. Just bake a gluten-free cake from a mix, crumble the cake when it’s done and mix the pieces with any flavor frosting. Form the cake balls to any desired size, add the stick and decorate with a choice of chocolate drizzle, sprinkles and/or frosting.

Banana Pops

Extremely easy to make, banana pops are a healthy treat that kids will have fun making and eating. They can be dipped in chocolate and decorated with coconut, nuts, sprinkles or any desired embellishment. The nutritious snack can be made ahead of time and frozen or let kids decorate their own as part of party festivities.

Doughnut Holes

Doughnut holes are easy to make and can be served at a party, as a snack or a breakfast treat. They’re light, fluffy, and fit a child’s small hands. The balls can be formed by hand or a cutter can be used. An added advantage is that they can also be fashioned into sticks for dunking milk or coffee.

Red Velvet Pie Cookies

These little mini pies combine the best of a cake and a cookie and begin with mini red velvet cakes that can easily be made at home. Take one of the mini cakes, slather on some cream cheese frosting, and top with another cake. The entire dessert can be sprinkled with powdered sugar for a more festive appearance.

Gluten Free Indulgence

Delicious, gluten-free desserts don’t require any more time or effort than traditional cakes or cookies with the gluten-free mixes available in the baking aisle of today’s supermarkets. They ensure anyone can have a safe and gluten-free treat to satisfy their sweet tooth.

8 Ways to Replace Your Kids Devices

Are you worried that your children are spending too much time playing computers games, or staring at their cell phones or iPads?  While we would like to think that right here in Florida there are so many wonderful incentives to get kids playing outside in the fresh air, more children than ever before are spending too much time glued to their devices.

If you would like to see your kids spend a little more time away from their devices, and enjoying the real world, try some of these ideas for size.

  1. Inspire them

Younger kids want to be just like their parents. Tell them stories about places that were special to you when you were a kid, and then take them there or show them somewhere similar so that they develop their own special relationship with their own environment.  This could be a park, a beach or even just a few streets that you crossed every day on your walk to or from school.

  1. Show them

Want them to go bodyboarding on the beach or kayaking through the Keys?  If you want them to try loads of high-octane activities, while you simply sit by and watch them, they won’t buy into it.  Lead by example, if you want them to try new and exciting things, try them first and show them that you are all in this together.

  1. Trust them

One of the hardest things with slightly older children is trusting them to go out with their friends on their own and hope that they make good decisions when you are not there to protect them. This is a natural part of growing up, and you need to let them have their freedom.  Educate them from an early age about boundaries, respect and potential dangers and they will be just fine.

  1. Treat them

If they want to do something special for a birthday or treat, make it happen.  So often as parents we are too busy, exhausted or just feeling the pinch financially that is easier to just say no and send them to their rooms instead.  As often as you can, make a real effort to treat them to an outdoor activity that they really want to go to.  It could be a sporting event, a special day out or even just a trip to the park – do it now, before you regret not doing it.

  1. Entertain them

It doesn’t take much to get young children smiling and having fun. Whether you choose a picnic in the park, a walk on the beach or a make-shift puppet show in the back yard, if you show that you are interested in them and want to have fun with them, your efforts will be rewarded ten-fold.

  1. Educate them

Got a project in school that has really sparked their interest?  Don’t tell them to google it, take them out and show them instead.  Museums, libraries and places of interest all have plenty of historical information that can relate directly to what they are learning at school.  These days history is not all about stuffy museums filled with boring subjects, it’s all interactive, educational fun that they will enjoy, and you will feel good about.

  1. Include them

Why not get everyone together for a family BBQ or neighborhood gathering?  Invite all the kids of all ages, and their friends too, and let them feel part of something really special.  It can be hard to keep kids engaged, especially if there are big age gaps, but simple, timeless activities like bounce houses or water slides are guaranteed to make kids of all ages smile.

  1. Amaze them with inflatables from South Florida Bounce

Give us a call today to see how we can get your kids out of their bedrooms, away for their devices, and into the back yard or community space with our super awesome inflatables, waterslides, sports, and activities.  Call us at 561.245.7100 to find out more.
